With the hood extended I just leave the top of the compartment open, which is not a problem as I'm in shooting mode anyway and need quick access for wildlife. The side compartments hold other lenses that I might use while on the trail. Front compartment holds most other accessories that I need while out shooting.
This bag is very sturdy and well made. It is also comfortable enough to tote on fairly long hikes when fully loaded down. It gets a little cumbersome after a couple hours, but not intolerably so. No additional straps or harnesses seem to be necessary.
My only complaint is that the main compartment zip cover should have been equipped with a quick release latch and opened toward either the front or back instead of the side.
