Addendum to my original review: I realize and accept the fact that all harddrives fail and basically this one died within a year. The problem is that if you need secure data protection and due to the nature of harddrive potential failures, you'll end up needing to purchase two of these units, which then becomes an expensive situation. Furthermore, once the unit fails, you can't even get inside the unit because the unit will no longer recognize your fingerprint. All in all, whether or not these relatively expensive units are really worth it will depend on your use, but in the end, it definitely was not worth it for me... simply because the unit is not reliable. I'm better off going with a reliable company that actually makes ext harddrives such as seagate etc... 1. Here's an actual review of this biometric HD:
a. Set up of the fingerprint: you'll have to do it on a windows cpu and the brief instructions are clear and basic. No problems. It takes around several minutes.
b. Once you tell the HD what fingerprints to use, you can then initialize the HD via windows or mac; I use a mac and thus initialized it accordingly. Again, easy.
c. After you do the above, the HD only mounts to the desktop after you swipe your finger; the recognition of the fingerprint is very quick and very accurate.
d. Once the HD mounts to the desktop, you can utilize it like any other HD.
2. In terms of the reviewer who was dismayed with losing his data, this is not the fault of this product. The reason one purchases an encrypted drive is for security and thus if that person could have recovered his data, then this product wouldn't have been that secure. In terms of hard drives failing--> all hard drives will fail at some point and every drive manufacturer has horror stories of failed drives etc... Thus--> backup.. yes, with another encrypted drive, if you're purpose is complete security etc...
3. Bottomline: this product is easy to use and actually works. Highly recommended. The only possible negative is that perhaps (I'm not completely sure) some of the functionality is limited in the Mac enviornment (I'm not completely sure on this because I just utilize the basic features of the drive, but some of the documentation leads me to believe this is true).
