Xterasys 2.4GHz 802.11b/g 5dB Range Extender Review

(More customer reviews)I tried searching for a solid wireless antenna for my D-link router because I lost the stock antenna and was getting poor service in my large 1-2 bedroom apartment.
So, I shopped around amazon, and could not find 100% good reviews for any single item.
I noticed Xterasys sounded professional, so I checked out their website. They seem to offer a lot of network hardware, so I felt like they were not just some 'ebay-style' seller that was trying to make a cheap buck. I also noticed that the prices listed for their antennas on Amazon seem low, but that is because the shipping is high :)
Anyway, I went with an Xterasys 9db antenna, and I am COMPLETELY satisfied. Although I don't live in an enormous house or anything, it took me from having 1-2 bars of service when a room or two away from the antenna-less router, to now having 5 bars at all times no matter where I am in my apartment.
I admit that this review is somewhat unfair because I went from using NO antenna to using a 9db Xterasys antenna, so who knows if there is a difference between the 5db and 9db, but I can honestly say that I am totally satisfied with Xterasys's antenna, because it fixed my situation 100%. I now get amazing wireless signal everywhere in my apartment, but who knows how well these things would do in a large house that has multiple levels.
For my specific needs, my Xterasys antenna has come through big time.

(More customer reviews)hooked it up to my alfa adapter today and easily doubled the strength i was getting from the stock antenna. is an easy install, but would have been nice if they marked one side of the panel with "this side towards target" or some such so as to know better how to aim it (the side without writing towards target). I have played with tin cans, pringles cans, windsurfers, and more. some are better than this but for how easy it works and how small it packs this is a keeper. but still would recommended a yagi or a dish if you need maximum distance and portability is not an issue (I use this setup with a netbook).

2.4GHz Square GRID Parabolic Antenna 24dBi Review

(More customer reviews)This antenna works beyond my expectations. I went from a 7dBi omni-directional antenna, to this 24dBi directional antenna. I was running very slow and could not always connect. I am about 100 yards from the base router which is indoors. I do not have a clear line of sight to the house due to several large, dense trees. I mounted the antenna on a pole about 10' from the ground.
The instructions for assembling the unit are non-existent. Not even on their own website. I used common sense and a few pictures posted on Amazon. I did guess on a couple of things. It comes in five pieces.
I also purchased the TrendNet 8 meter low loss "N-type to Reverse SMA" cable. The male N-type connects to the short piggy-tail of the antenna. The Reverse SMA connects to the male SMA on the network bridge (D-Link DWL-G820).
Ran multiple speed tests on the direct connection, wireless in the house, and at the access point. The speed at the access point is slower than the direct connection, but faster than the wireless in the house. VERY HAPPY WEB SURFER!!!

(More customer reviews)At first, I wasn't sure if I liked this little antenna or not. There isn't much to it... it's got a connector, a cord, a magnetic base (which is pretty strong by the way) and of course the antenna itself. It didn't seem to give me much of an improvement until I learned how to pick the correct location for it...
The biggest benefit of having one of these is flexibility of placement. With antennas, correct placement is crucial. I bought two: one for my desktop PC and one for my router. These antennas aren't necessarily any more sensitive than the little plastic ones that come with wifi cards and access points, but being able to move the antenna location from behind the PC on the floor (which is where most people with wireless cards have their antennas) to the top of your desk or on top of your monitor makes a big difference right away.
Now, if you are really serious about getting the best performance out of this antenna, I would suggest you download a program called NetStumbler. It will let you see the S/N ratio in dBm and it updates in real-time. This lets you get perfect placement with your antenna. You'd be amazed what a difference an inch to the left or right can make. I have a feeling a lot of people who have problems with aftermarket wifi antennas are not placing them properly.
For $5.54 each plus a couple bucks for shipping, this antenna can't be beat.
