The reality of WiFi is that just about everyone I know is not getting as solid a signal as they'd like. I've been frustrated by dead spots in the house, and I'm sure we've all done strange "rain dances" with our notebooks, cables, antennas, etc. to try to improve the signal.
However, my WiFi network did not seem as zippy as my Ethernet when using our cable modem, even though the bandwidth of both networks dwarfs the cable modem. Well, instantly after installing the booster, I got noticeably better response in a room where the signal used to be so weak that Linksys' own utility would show no signal strength (even though I could surf from there).
The WSB24 is trivial to install (180 seconds and that was because I didn't know you had to push the cable onto the connector pretty firmly). If you were a LinkSys pioneer and bought the early access points, you owe it to yourself to upgrade with this booster.

The TV signal from your TV antenna becomes weaker as it travels through the coax cable to your TV.The farther it must travel the weaker it becomes. Signal splitters also weaken the signal. The more times the signal is divided the weaker it becomes. The splitter itself creates the signal loss, it doesn't matter if the TV's are on or off or even if all of the connections on the splitter are used the loss still occurs, it's called insertion loss. The line loss that occurs getting the signal from the TV antenna to the TV or TV's can be overcome by installing a preamplifier near the TV antenna amplifying the signal before the signal loss occurs.
The degree a signal amplifier increases the signal strength is measured in decibels (dB). The higher the amplifiers dB rating is the greater the strength of the signal is increased. "Wait a minute, I know what your thinking "I'll just get the biggest high output amplifier I can get and that will solve all my problems. I have one word for you, OVERLOAD. When too much signal is present overload can and does happen. Signal overload can occur in the amplifier, the TV tuner or both. Use the guidelines below, to select the proper amplifier for your system.
Selecting the correct TV antenna amplifier is a simple mathematical process.
Add-up the total amount of signal decibel loss that will occur as the signal travels from the TV antenna to the TV with the longest cable run. Add the signal loss from the cable length and any splitters between the antenna and the TV. Choose the amplifier with the dB gain rating that is from 5 to 10dB greater then the total loss. EXAMPLE: 100 feet of coax cable and a 2 way splitter have a signal dB loss of 8.7 dB. Also VCR's and other such devices that the signal travels through create minor signal losses. A perfect amplifier match for the above example would be the Winegard AP 8700. The 8700 amplifier has a gain rating of 19dB.

Appearance - Good looking compact unit with fittings and exceptionally long USB cable (about 12') ****
Condition - Arrived damaged - the unit rattled and the connector to fix the USB to had fallen inside. These issues were fixed by a local repair man after the seller authorized opening without voiding warranty. **
Ease of set up - On Windows 7 it was plug and play - we used the CD on an older machine, both were simple and found the unit quickly and easily. *****
Signal strength - Definately line of sight - but almost on an if you can see it, you can use it. Effectively we'd say about a mile in marina settings to close to 2 miles, maybe slightly more across open sea. As a set difference, with the onboard PC WIFI, one signal recieved, with this unit (in a 3rd world country) 9 useable signals recieved. ****
Software - Simple, graphic, easy to understand - just runs in the background, on top, or shut it down and use Windows. *****
Drop Outs - Zero to date (in 5 days) versus 10 - 12 an hour with the onboard (laptop builtin) cards.

After exchanging the initial product with one that worked this product did improve the range of my WI-FI. The tech support was great on dealing with the exchange of the bad unit, although I did RMA through DBRoth instead of the manufacturer in the end because it was a quicker exchange. I am broadcasting about 1/4 mile with an external 19dbi antenna using a Linksys WAP54G. At the receiving end I used a second WAP54G with original antennas as a repeater. I tried using various other APs, the Cicso worked best but was more expensive than the Linksys. Others did not perform that well. Do not expect this to double or triple your reception. I saw a 20-30% improvement, which was what I needed. I also tested this product in my office with similar results, 20-30% signal boost. I used WISpy from [...] to test signal strength.

I was nearly unable to get wireless in my den, about 30 feet from my office - but through 5 or 6 interior walls.
Added this amp to my router - now get good to very good signal strength where I need it.
Was hoping for "great", gave 4 stars for "very good".

This antenna works beyond my expectations. I went from a 7dBi omni-directional antenna, to this 24dBi directional antenna. I was running very slow and could not always connect. I am about 100 yards from the base router which is indoors. I do not have a clear line of sight to the house due to several large, dense trees. I mounted the antenna on a pole about 10' from the ground.
The instructions for assembling the unit are non-existent. Not even on their own website. I used common sense and a few pictures posted on Amazon. I did guess on a couple of things. It comes in five pieces.
I also purchased the TrendNet 8 meter low loss "N-type to Reverse SMA" cable. The male N-type connects to the short piggy-tail of the antenna. The Reverse SMA connects to the male SMA on the network bridge (D-Link DWL-G820).
Ran multiple speed tests on the direct connection, wireless in the house, and at the access point. The speed at the access point is slower than the direct connection, but faster than the wireless in the house. VERY HAPPY WEB SURFER!!!

One of the highest-gain mass-market TV preamps you can get, good in fringe areas where all the TV signals are weak; however, if you also have a strong TV station nearby its signal can overload any high-gain preamp and degrade all channels. Also, nearby lightning strikes within a few blocks can blow preamps even without direct contact.
This one from ANTOnline worked OK, but be aware that Winegard has outsourced production to China and it seems that reliability of this and all items formerly made in the U.S. have fallen drastically (not just my opinion!) - this is the 2nd Winegard preamp I've bought and the first one (not purchased from ANTOnline) was DOA and had to be replaced under warranty with the added postage expense. So, if you get a Winegard preamp that works that's good, but don't be surprised if it doesn't. Geez, even the simple packages of pre-cut RG-6 TV coax cable you need to wire this preamp up can't be trusted if they come from China - I bought 2 separate U.S.-branded packs now made in China and one was shorted and the other open, I had to cut the connectors off and put on new ones. And that wasn't all - I also bought a new antenna rotator that had been outsourced from the U.S. to China, and it broke down in just 2 days! Give us a break! It almost seems like a conspiracy!

At first, I wasn't sure if I liked this little antenna or not. There isn't much to it... it's got a connector, a cord, a magnetic base (which is pretty strong by the way) and of course the antenna itself. It didn't seem to give me much of an improvement until I learned how to pick the correct location for it...
The biggest benefit of having one of these is flexibility of placement. With antennas, correct placement is crucial. I bought two: one for my desktop PC and one for my router. These antennas aren't necessarily any more sensitive than the little plastic ones that come with wifi cards and access points, but being able to move the antenna location from behind the PC on the floor (which is where most people with wireless cards have their antennas) to the top of your desk or on top of your monitor makes a big difference right away.
Now, if you are really serious about getting the best performance out of this antenna, I would suggest you download a program called NetStumbler. It will let you see the S/N ratio in dBm and it updates in real-time. This lets you get perfect placement with your antenna. You'd be amazed what a difference an inch to the left or right can make. I have a feeling a lot of people who have problems with aftermarket wifi antennas are not placing them properly.
For $5.54 each plus a couple bucks for shipping, this antenna can't be beat.
