If you use VPN and want it to continue to function, don't upgrade your firmware to Release 10 (released in late 2003). Otherwise, you will be like me with a crippled router.

Setup: fairly straightforward. There is a "wizard" setup for those who don't like to go through every single option screen. The screen navigation is laid out in a simple, but not intuitive manner - it takes a few moments to realize the buttons on the left change with tab options at the top, but the buttons on the left don't change if there are multiple screens on the right (like "next page" or a button to press). There is no "go back a page" - they expect you to hit the button to the right that is still visible. All my complaining about that aside - it's as easy, if not easier, to navigate and find settings than both netgear and linksys.
Print server: no setup available on the router - it either is or is not plugged in. Software setup for PC works fine. Did not try it with linux yet.
Wireless: finally, something that works with 64/128 bit WEP. Netgear never worked. Linksys was so-so. This works. NOTE: For those who want to limit ACCESS to the WIRELESS by MAC ADDRESS - this unit cannot do it. It can limit by MAC to the INTERNET, but that will also limit who can attach to the unit, both with wireless and with a physical connection. Most other units only use this filter to limit access to the wireless portion. If used, you have to put in all the machines connecting to it - both wireless and physical....
Firewall: Syslog, email logs available. Nice. SPI works. DMZ support. Passthrough ports available. Works great with my nortel VPN client (this is always a good test of PPTP and so on).
FIRMWARE NOTE: I had the hardest time getting this thing to work with windows terminal services. No matter what setting I used, it would lock up then drop the connection until I rebooted the router (software reboot). Some settings would go longer, but I could get it to lock up within 2 minutes. Nothing seemed to fix it - a few people have reported this on the internet, but since most people aren't using the terminal services part of windows on a regular basis - they would never know it.
The fix was to load the 1.22 firmware, not the 1.23 that came with it. This REMOVES the 802.1X authentication tab (some type of shared radius key BS - if you want radius support, get a REAL wireless device) and it removes the 4X mode for the B+ series of wireless adapters (which I do not have anyway).
TO LOAD FIRMWARE: you would need to run either executable (one for MAC or the other for PC) OR use the web browser to upload the file (requires either java or activeX - not sure) because it opens up the "open file" dialog box - meaning - experimental browsers, like those in my beloved linux box - don't work well with this. ALSO - it states in no unclear terms DO NOT UPGRADE USING A WIRELESS LINK. Use a hard wired computer. I went from 1.23 to 1.22 and back and forth and so on testing this remote desktop issue.
FINAL FIX: load 1.23, hit the button to reset the router to the defaults, load 1.22, reboot, hit the button to reset the router to the defaults, then type all your configuration back in.
Why the crazy steps? If you loaded 1.23, typed ANYTHING in the boxes that aren't available in 1.22 - it remembers and will cause problems, even though that option isn't availble in 1.22 (I tried this - several times for fun). 1.23 -> load setup defaults -> load 1.22 -> load setup defaults -> configure.
Live without their crippled version of RADIUS (if you don't know what this is you don't need it) and who cares about the crappy 4X mode for the B+ stuff? Another marketing ploy anyway.
Bottom line - with some experimentation, I figured out the firmware thing. IT has worked BETTER than the linksys ever did (can we say firmware of the week?) and improved over the netgears I have used (you can print and not be disconnected from the internet - thanks a lot netgear).
4 stars because firmware is supposed to fix stuff, and their two listed updates should not have affected the RDP stuff in 2000/XP. But it did.

Warning: Never, ever, ever buy this item or recommend it to a client. If you do buy it, don't buy it from Amazon, it will be harder to return it.
I am an IT consultant and I want to start off by saying that I really like the Sonicwall products that I have worked with before (wired firewall/routers). This is the reason, in fact, that I recommended this product to a client when they said that they wanted a secure Wi-Fi solution for the Tablet PC's they were buying for their office.
From the first day working with the product I regretted my recommendation.
Setup was easy, even not using the built-in wizards. But after setting things up for a bit I realized that the router was bound and determined to put the wired and wireless computers onto different subnets and that there was no way to change this behavior. That would not have been a problem, except that there is no way to allow those two subnets to communicate with each other (not on a workgroup anyway) unless you use Sonicwall's VPN software to create a VPN from the wireless client to the router and then to the wired network. In fact, the built-in firewall blocks communications between the subnets by default, but even after disabling this (and checking the box that said to "allow Windows networking") the two subnets still couldn't see each other.
I looked on Sonicwall's forum's (which you only have access to after purchasing and registering a product) and found that this is a common problem with no real answers except to use Sonicwalls VPN client (there were other answers given, but none of them worked). The best I could figure the problem was with name resolution, the firewall could be set to "allow" NetBios packets through from one subnet to another, but there was no evidence that the router was actually forwarding those packets. I assume that the subnets could communicate using another name-resolution system, but DNS wasn't available on my client's workgroup :). My clients pretty much needed the Wi-Fi network for Internet access, and didn't use it much anyway, so this didn't bother them and we just left things as they were.
My clients only used the Tablet PC's occasionally for the first couple of months and had connection problems off and on, it was usually a matter of resetting the router, and everything was fixed. Then, in about the third month of owning the router, they began using the Tablet PC's more often and had constant connection problems. I went in to diagnose the problem, thinking that the problem might be the tablets as they were identifying the router as an unsecure connection (it was WPA/TKIP). I made sure that Windows and all drivers were updated. I tried to connect to the router when standing right next to it, but was unable. I discovered that my PDA also identified the connection as unsecured. I made sure that the router had the latest updates and then I checked its logs and discovered that it had been reporting several errors:
1. It would say that it couldn't create an association with the client trying to connect, but then, immediately afterward, would say that the client had been authenticated. (The client wasn't connected)
2. It would say that the clients were using a kind of encryption that it didn't understand (or somesuch).
3. It said, at least once, that too many clients were connected to the router (even though there were only five computers in the office and the thing is licensed for ten), so it couldn't accept any more connections. It said this when reporting elsewhere that there were only three computers connected (one of which was not actually connected at the time).
I unplugged the router and plugged it back in and the tablets connected immediatley. I went to the Sonicwall forums and found that problems like this were quite common (as were stories of consultants with clients angry about this). It seems that the thing "freaks out" on a fairly regular basis and then just drops connections and doesn't let them re-connect.
I had already spent several hours confirming that it was the router that was at fault and so, at this time, I recommended to my client that they get rid of this and buy a D-Link for $50. They did, it worked without a hitch.
I've already done several hours of free work for them trying to get my recommendation to work and now I'm trying to return the router for my client, so they aren't out $450 (or I'm not out $450, since I recommended the thing). I called Sonicwall and was forwarded to sales and then to the "account manager for my territory" who basically told me that there isn't a darn thing that Sonicwall will do for me and kept trying to get me to talk to tech support (even after I told him that my client had purchased a new router that was working just fine), but I already spent so many hours pinning the problem on the router and wasting my client's time, and my clients were already so frustrated with the thing (and, by proxy, me) that I don't want to spend a couple of more hours trying to fix this very badly put-together product (it was noted a few times in the forums that this appears to be just a normal Sonicwall firewall/router with Wi-Fi slapped on as an afterthought) and frustrating my clients any further (and shutting down their network again). He said that there was nothing that Sonicwall could do about it and that I have to return the product to Amazon who, I think he said, will then try to pass it back to their Sonicwall reseller and they will, I think, consult Sonicwall support, so my client may or may not get any money back. I wasn't sure on those last two bits.
One way or another, this guy was wayyyy more concerned about getting me to keep the router than satisfying a consultant who has been responsible for the sale of several of his company's products. A mistake that I won't make again.

It came in the mail yesterday and I had it up and running in about 15 mins. So installation gets 5 stars. And it definitely works as an extender as I am now getting full signal strength upstairs in my bedroom while the router is in the far corner of the basement. All appeared to be good until I started to do more than surf the internet. I couldn't hold a connection to my company's VPN and I kept losing connection when I tried to download podcasts to itunes. I unplugged it and I haven't seen the problem since, so it has to be the extender causing the issue. It not only causes a problem with my laptop upstairs, but any computer on the network. The D-Link forum has several complaints with the same issue, but D-link has yet to respond to these complaints. The closest I saw to a recommended fix was in their Knowledgebase - they recommended changing the "Preamble" setting to "short" (default is "long") for busy networks or for downloading large files. I will try this when I get home tonight and see if this corrects the issue.
UPDATE: 5/26/2010 - I switched the Preamble to "short" and that did nothing to solve my problem. Back to the ol' drawing board! Next stop, tech support. Ugh!
UPDATE: 6/3/2010 - I emailed customer support a week ago and have heard nothing. Also, they have failed to respond to their own customer forum regarding this same issue. Lame, very lame. They leave me no option but to return this item.

Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

I have to say, I was a little concerned about this product after reading about some of the difficulties other buyers have experienced. I was also a bit nervous about installing it myself, since I am not what you would call a computer expert.
From Day One after installing it, though, I have been impressed. It gets fantastic range throughout my entire house, even through walls and heavy, metal objects. Signal strength on my computers is almost always between 90-100%, and has NEVER dipped below 73%.
As for the network installation itself, it was easy and took a total of about an hour (and that includes installation and configuration of wireless cards on 2 computers).
And you can't beat the price on this thing. I highly recommend this and other Netgear wireless network products.

I bought the Intel WiFi Link 5300 card to replace the stock card in my Dell Mini 9 netbook. The stock card is b/g only and gave me a lot of trouble associating with my home router. The Intel card arrived promptly and included the Intel ProSet 12 software on CD (though I had already downloaded an updated version from Intel's web site). The card and software installed easily.
The Mini 9 has only two antennas (I have a third on order) so I initially connected the two to the 1 and 2 terminals on the Intel card. It worked well and gave me a strong signal in my house, though sometimes the Wireless N connection was weak. I am sure the third antenna will help with that. No problem associating with my access point and the speed is great.
An easy upgrade if you are dissatisfied with the wireless solution in your netbook or notebook that uses a Mini-PCIe connector. Just make sure that the card size is correct - Intel makes one that's even smaller, but the Dell Mini 9 took this size.
Edit: As I predicted, adding the third antenna brought back the N performance. I'm now running Windows 7 on the Mini 9 and it recognized the Intel 5300 and operates it without the need for additional drivers or the Intel ProSet software, though the software does give you more information about how the card is performing. I'm very happy with the 5300.
Edit 9/30/09 - I've been getting lots of questions about where I obtained the third antenna and how it is installed. The antenna I used is made by Tyco and is typically sold in a pack of two. Amazon doesn't sell it, but if you search eBay for "tyco minipci" you will find many for sale. The pack is typically less than $10. Each antenna consists of a large square foil area, backed by adhesive, and a smaller section with an S-shaped foil trace, which is the actual, radiating part of the antenna. The only difference between the two antennae in the pack is the length of the lead, so pick the one that works best for you.
For best results, the antenna would be mounted inside the display lid of your notebook/netbook, positioned so that the S-shaped trace is not blocked by the LCD panel or metal shielding. It's ok for the adhesive-backed section to be blocked as this is just a "ground plane". The antenna should be as high up on the lid as you can manage, though I've heard from some who just let it lay flat inside the base of their PC and they say it "works fine".
The connectors used are standard but are somewhat fragile. Pull them straight up from the card and push straight down, taking care to align the plug correctly. You may find that long-nose pliers help (but don't squeeze too hard.)
Note that the Intel 5100 card is very similar to the 5300 except that it does not support the 3x3 mode with the very highest transfer rates (and uses only two antennae.) You may find that the 5100 is more than adequate for your needs, especially if your wireless router itself doesn't support the 3x3 mode (few do.)
One more point - both the 5100 and 5300 support Intel's "My WiFi" technology which lets you share Internet access with local WiFi devices. This requires the Intel ProSet driver and application which can be downloaded from Intel's web site - read more details on Intel's site.
